Heart and Cardiac Research Equipment
Cardiac Services at Flinders Medical Centre provides a comprehensive treatment program for patients with cardiovascular disease. The department is widely recognised for their commitment to innovative interventions both in clinical cardiology and cardiac surgery.
One example of the ground-breaking work underway at Flinders sits within the Cardiac Imaging Research Group (CIRG).
The principal research focus of this group is the use Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) as a research tool to investigate mechanisms and effect of heart disease.
To date, the research has focused upon 3 broad areas:
- heart failure and cardiomyopathy (chronic disease of the heart muscle) ;
- novel myocardial ischemia techniques (reduced blood flow); and
- assessment of myocardial protection (increases the hearts ability to withstand trauma).
