2010 Tax Appeal

"I am standing here today because I have been cured. But it is important to keep in mind there are other stories - names we don‘t know, faces we don‘t know, stories we don‘t know - which didn‘t have the same outcomes.

"I look forward to hearing all the good stories that come out of this centre. This is the birth of hope and the birth of inspiration for so many people."

- Seven times Tour de France winner and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong speaking about the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer, January 2010.

You can support the cancer prevention research which has inspired LIVESTRONG.

At an official groundbreaking ceremony for the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer earlier this year, champion cyclist and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong spoke passionately about his expectations for the new centre and its vital research into cancer prevention strategies, early detection tools, and innovative treatments.

The cycling champion has given the name of his foundation LIVESTRONG to the research wing of the new $27 million integrated cancer centre which will be built at Flinders Medical Centre in August this year.

Cancer prevention research will become the focus area for more than 100 leading biomedical, behavioural and clinical researchers who will work within the LIVESTRONG Cancer Research Centre conducting laboratory and clinical trials to find solutions for numerous types and forms of cancers.

You can help!

By supporting cancer research through the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation, you are ensuring 100% of your donation will go towards establishing or continuing cutting edge research into:

Prostate Cancer - such as Associate Professor Pam Sykes‘ research using low doses of radiation to prevent or halt the progression of prostate cancer.

Breast Cancer - such as Dr Michael Michael‘s research into whether reintroducing a particular microRNA (present in normal breast cells but not in breast cancer cells) will prevent or reduce the growth of tumours

Digestive Cancers - such as Professor Graeme Young‘s research in preventing bowel cancer through nutrition, or Professor David Watson‘s research into lifestyle factors which cause Oesophageal cancer.

Gynaecological Cancers - such as Dr Robert James‘ work in making the current Pap smear test more accurate by better identifying the characteristics of pre-cancerous cells in the cervix.

Anything you can give to support these and other vital cancer prevention projects will be very much appreciated.

In the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer, these researchers, amongst many others researching an extensive list of cancer types, will work hand in hand with oncologists, surgeons, nutritionists, psychologists, cancer nurses, and allied health professionals to ensure the most comprehensive research and drive the best and most compassionate cancer care.

The Centre will also provide include an expanded rural and remote service to address the diverse challenges faced by patients in country areas, and a unique survivorship program which will ensure cancer survivors receive the very best psychological care and support long after their treatment finishes.

Please dig deep and help our researchers achieve the best possible results for these areas of healthcare that affect us all. Your donation will make a difference.

Don’t forget!

The Flinders Medical Centre Foundation also supports vital hospital equipment purchases and important medical research into many other major diseases such as heart, eye, liver, kidney, obesity, and degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer‘s, Parkinson‘s and Arthritis.

If you donate today, you will also be able to claim your donation in this year‘s tax return (depending on your personal tax circumstances).

"What ever your 100% looks like, give it." - Lance Armstrong
