Mr Hawke is a third generation South Australian as well as one of the 20th century's most notable Prime Ministers (1983 - 1991). With his leadership the Labour party won four consecutive elections in a row, and he is known as one of Australia’s most beloved former Prime Ministers. When taking up the role of Patron for the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation in 2002, Mr Hawke stated that he was pleased to make this commitment to both the Foundation and the people of South Australia.

His long career in public life, as a union official and political leader, has been characterised by a commitment to the betterment of the lives of all Australians, a view which is undoubtedly shared by all who work tirelessly at the Flinders Medical Centre.
